Grilled Bourbon and Onion Turkey Burgers

Ingredients
  • 2 medium white onions sliced into thin rings
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp each cumin, salt, pepper, oregano
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 lb ground turkey thigh
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire
  • 1/2 tsp each, salt and pepper
  • 4 thin slices Gruyere cheese
  • Arugula lettuce
Directions
  1. Saute the onions over medium heat (low and slow) until caramel and golden. About 30 minutes. Just as they begin to caramelize, add the cumin, salt, pepper and oregano.
  2. Add the bourbon and continue to saute until the onions get nice and syrupy looking and the bourbon just about evaporates. Stir in the brown sugar and set aside to cool. (This can be done earlier in the day)
  3. Add the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to the ground turkey and mix well. Add the cooled onions, mix well, and form into four equal sized patties.
  4. Place onto an oil grill heated to medium and grill about 8 minutes per side until the turkey burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
  5. Melt a thin slice of Gruyere cheese over top and serve on buns with arugula lettuce and the condiments of your choice.
